DisCity

Overview

DisCity, sometimes referred to as The DisCity or The City of Sins, is the most prominent city-state in the post-Nightfall world and the only major city on the Western Continent. After the impact of the Perishing Star, surviving humans were forced to gather in loose settlements in the areas of the globe least ravaged by supernatural disasters, but Dr. Keylan's discovery of Hypercubes in N.F. 21-25 allowed them to once again congregate in a more formal, centralized fashion, and the EDGE Accords marked the city's foundation for this express purpose. Thus, the mining and distribution of Hypercubes is DisCity's main contribution to Nightfall era society. Although its production of Hypercubes makes the city "a beacon of hope," DisCity is socially defined by rampant corruption, violence, segregation, and a stark class divide. The threat of Mania, as well as its authoritarian power structures, require DisCity authorities to maintain control through strict law enforcement, censorship, and even memory altering technology.

For all its problems, DisCity has grown ever since its foundation, with immigrants coming in droves. Today, DisCity is the only mega-metropolis on its continent.

Location

------

DisCity is built is over the Perishing Star's impact crater, which was in turn the former site of the city of Maria. It is located 12,000 km south of Mayek, bordering the DisSea, and is surrounded on all sides by WhiteSands.

DisCity itself is divided into three major regions:

Syndicate, a post-industrial sector dominated by gang violence,

Eastside, a wealthy hub for tech and entertainment,

and The Rust, a largely uninhabited dumping ground for corrupted waste.

Of these, Eastside is stated to have suburbs. Some satellite towns have sprung up around DisCity as well. Paradeisos is likely somewhere within the borders of DisCity or in close proximity to it, though its precise location is currently unknown.

Government

------

The government in DisCity is highly stratified and complex. Supreme governmental authority lies with Paradeisos, the exact workings of which are unknown. With Paradeisos's authorization, the City Council acts as the main governing body of the city. However, since 13 years before the start of the game, the City Council had ceded control of Syndicate via the West District Order Management Regulations, effectively allowing the gangs to act as stand-in government while it controlled Eastside. Corruption is endemic in DisCity's governance, with the greatest beneficiary being the Nirvana megacorporation that controls the production and export of Hypercubes.

Additionally, given the prevalence of Black Ring-related crises and the high rate of crime, military branches such as the Framework Against Catastrophe and the Public Security Bureau exert significant autonomy. The 9th Agency, EDGE, and the Minos Bureau of Crisis Control perform more secretive, specialized roles, but still have access to the full extent of governmental resources. Langley, the director of the 9th Agency and the MBCC, has direct contact with Paradeisos. It is currently unknown if members of the other militarized branches have the same privilege.

Institutions

------

Life in DisCity is comparable to that of 21st century Earth. There are some exceptions, such as the city's sanitation being handled by robots, but technological advancements have not brought notable change to the lives of most DisCitizens. Priority has been given to automation, robotics, and the military, while consumer hardware remains relatively unchanged. Publishing and the arts, as well as social media, are still prominent in the Nightfall era. Medicine and education remain comparable as well, although the wealth gap between the two districts has concentrated most of the higher learning in Eastside. There are many businesses that exist independently of the government, suggesting that society still follows a primarily capitalist economic system.

Crime

------

There are many criminal organizations in both Eastside and Syndicate, with the more powerful ones operating between them. While the Legion is the most prominent of the gangs in the West District, many smaller ones continue to vie for power, especially in Zoya's absence following her disappearance. The Homeless appears operate without any gang affiliations.

Many of the gangs seem to have relatively small numbers and lack a sense of serious organization beyond the adherence to a certain style or aesthetic. This stands in stark contrast to the handful of more formal organizations like The Garden, which seems to have a more established line of funding and a wider network of contacts.

Tetra and Pricilla are some of the only known career criminals who don't belong to an organization, instead relying on their Sinner abilities to evade the authorities until their arrest by the MBCC.
