Overview
The Keylan Expedition was a scientific expedition to explore the DisSea between N.F. 21 and N.F. 25. Amidst the chaos and devastation of the post-Nightfall world, in N.F. 21 the scientist Keylan assembled an investigation team of forty-three individuals, comprised of thirteen scientists as well as additional support personnel, to explore the DisSea, with the ultimate goal of finding and studying the Perishing Star.
The mission proper began in N.F. 23. Precisely 312 minutes after the team approached the "death zone", outside contacts lost communication with the team, a phenomenon consistent with entering a Black Ring. The Keylan expedition spent much of their three years within BR-000 trapped in a temporal loop, unable to approach the Perishing Star. They were only able to escape the loop by following the instructions of their mysterious child guide, who instructed them to follow the rising Phantom Moon to find the real path to Maria and the Source.
Outcome
Two years and three months after entering the death zone, Dr. Keylan returned as the sole survivor of his team. The other forty-two members of the expedition were believed to have lost their lives during the mission; many were killed by Apostles or mutated into Corruptors, while some others became the earliest-known Sinners and remained behind in DisSea. Their consciousnesses formed a spiritual realm called Nightmare Space, containing their memories of the expedition. A stele seen in Nightmare Space contains the names of all 42 lost explorers.
From within the Black Ring, Keylan brought out the first known Hypercubes, a raw material that acts as an energy source and has powerful anti-Mania properties. With this discovery, Keylan created hope for humanity to survive the post-Nightfall calamities sweeping the globe. Under Keylan's direction, the Trailblazer Initiative brought the first immigrants to the DisSea region to mine for Hypercubes. Shortly thereafter, the EDGE Accords were signed, establishing DisCity on the DisSea's shores.
