Corruptor

A Corruptor is a monster born from Mania. Corruptors are extremely aggressive and dangerous, with a deformed body and little to no sanity. In addition to the physical danger of their attacks, Corruptors pose a high risk of spreading Mania through mass Resonance, and the rapid transformation of many Corruptors in a single place is a potential trigger for the descent of a Black Ring. There are two broad types of Corruptors: native and mutated.

Mutated

Mutated Corruptors are transformed humans in the final stage of Mania infection. For ordinary humans, this process occurs when their M-Value reached 200. Corruptors often have bone or tentacle-like protrusions, distorted heads or jaws, and dark, discolored flesh. They usually also share some aspect of their pre-transformation body, whether it be their overall build or specific recognizable features, in the case of Brand and the Gray-Haired Girl. Corruptors, like Sinners, have enhanced physical capabilities, although rarely possess any other special abilities beyond that. Although Mania enhances an infected individual's predilection towards negative feelings, Corruptors, while maintaining the enhanced aggression and bloodthirstiness of a late-stage Maniac, do not normally display higher order negative emotions, seeming to act largely on instinct.

As the degree of one's Mania directly correlates to the degree of their negative emotions, it would seem that Maniacs experiencing higher amounts of mental strain at the time of their transformation become more powerful Corruptors. Stronger Corruptors often possess one or more Contamination Cores, which further strengthen them at the cost of giving them visible weak spots. It is said that the core stores the Corruptor's last shred of consciousness, though there is no conclusive evidence for this theory. Targeting the Contamination Cores can temporarily immobilize and weaken a Corruptor, although that alone may not be enough to kill them.

Sinners, despite having higher resistance to Mania, can still go Manic and become Corruptors. This is shown again in the case of the Gray-Haired Girl, as well as in Ninety-Nine and Mess, whose bodies shows some of the early signs of physical mutation.

Physically amputating corrupted parts of the body may help slow the spread of Mania in a person, provided that the amputated limbs are the only areas that show signs of mutation. Iron does this to herself in order to stabilize her M-Values, and it is a common treatment performed by SALVA Hospital.

Native

Native Corruptors are monsters born directly from areas of high contamination. They take a wide variety of forms, depending on external factors such as the environment they were created in and the emotional timbre of the contamination that produced their contaminants. Native Corruptors are closely related to Apostles of Ash.
