DisMyth is the name of DisCity's dark web. It is a multilayered and heavily encrypted information network, where users are anonymous, untraceable, and largely unmonitored by the city's authorities. Due to its discrete and unregulated nature, DisMyth is mostly used by criminals, villains, and malcontents of all kinds to communicate and operate invisibly. DisMyth rose to particular prominence during the renaissance of Syndicate after the defeat of BR-002, as the restoration of order to the district forced its gangs and other underworld elements into hiding. By moving their operations onto the dark web, the gangs were able to continue a thriving black market for assassinations, human trafficking, organ harvesting, and all manner of other illegal actions. Nonetheless, not all uses of DisMyth are sinister in nature. In addition to criminal enterprises, DisMyth also plays host to much milder illicit activity, such as message boards for people to discuss urban legends and other rumors without observation by DisCity's media censors.
The dark web contains many stacked layers of hidden and encrypted information. Although all levels of DisMyth are nominally inaccessible without special permissions, the uppermost layers seem to be relatively easy for regular people to use. The app Grey Mirror was only available by downloading it from DisMyth, but it nevertheless became one of the most popular apps in Eastside and spread quickly after it first appeared on the dark web. Deeper layers rapidly become much harder to access and, even when technically accessible, are difficult to locate and to use. When the Chief gained access to DisMyth by using Angell's account, they remained unable to access much of the dark web's hidden activity due to their unfamiliarity with the platform even after weeks of daily use.
The creator of DisMyth is unknown, but its safeguards are considered to be ironclad and unbreakable. When Angell's contract to assassinate the Chief was edited into a kidnapping by an unknown third party, other DisMyth users thought such an alteration to be an impossibility. DisMyth may be operated by or connected to the Underground, as Bianca discovered a hidden server bank that was infused with Mania contamination during the Grey Mirror incident, but it is also possible that those servers were only related to the Grey Mirror app itself and not the wider dark web of DisMyth.
