A Schorl is a device, invented by the Ring Research Institute and utilized by Paradeisos, with a wide variety of functions ranging from combat to communication to information gathering and analysis. The Schorl's primary duty is to assist and protect individuals important to Paradeisos, such as the Hush, as well to monitor their stability and eliminate them if need be. Schorl appears to be intrinsically connected to the Hush system; The Schorl that Shalom received when she became the Hush was "deeply anchored in Rebel", and observation data gathered by the Schorl is converted into the energy of the Schorl itself. Shalom's Schorl is also referred to as "the No. 2 Schorl", possibly correlated with her position in the Second Observatorium, and Rahu received a Schorl as well when Paradeisos began using her as a tool to monitor Shalom's condition after the HUSH system was suspended. Paradeisos further makes reference to "each piece of Schorl", suggesting that the devices seen and referred to as Schorls may be satellite terminals of a central data center or supercomputer.
Schorl is capable of weaponizing the Rules, unleashing blasts of light blue energy with astonishing power and precision. This weaponry is particularly effective against Mania constructs, contaminants, and Sinners, due to its nature as an application of the Rules, but also has devastating effects on objects and regular humans as well. At their greatest extent, Schorl is able to destroy an FAC armored vehicle in a single hit and reducing buildings to rubble. The Schorl is also able to analyze the materials used by the MBCC to enhance Sinners in order to optimize its combat efficiency (though this is more of a gameplay rationalization than anything).
Schorls regularly hold a dialogue with their possessor, but it is unclear whether they are a communication device for another individual monitoring their systems, or a true artificial intelligence. Strangely, the Schorl seems to respond positively to praise, "becoming a chatterbox whenever it receives a compliment." In either case, outside entities are able to take over a Schorl's communication channel through Paradeisos' super-loop technology. Through use of the Mania-based psychic super-loop, they are able to communicate telepathically, as well as by speaking aloud. They are described as having a "flat synthetic voice".
